Through the Discipleship Course at HOD and events throughout the year, we offer young people aged 18 to 30 the opportunity to come and be discipled to Jesus. They join community members as together we seek God through prayer, fellowship, experience of community, teaching, service and mission.
He said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.”
Come Follow Jesus with our Community
Serving the Lord alongside members of a residential community is a challenging and wonderful way of life!
¨ The challenge is to get along with and grow to love the people God has given you to live with.
¨ The wonder is that as you draw closer to Jesus you find He gives daily grace beyond imagining to love and serve Him in the people He brings into your life.
Whilst these challenges and wonders are part of every Christian’s calling, community life is like being in a “spiritual greenhouse” that encourages growth in a safe and fertile environment.
Our life at HOD can get busy with the work and ministry of the community. However, it is important to us that what we do flows from communal and private prayer and worship, and a love of God’s Word. Living an ordinary life together is also important as we share the everyday things of life—meals, work and relaxation.
Dates in 2022
Life as a Disciple staying with the Community
Disciples are mostly based in The Paddock, separate from most Community accommodation but close by. Most meals are taken with HOD and you would join us in various prayer times and in larger meetings for praise, worship and teaching. Our worship is charismatic in nature, and we are an ecumenical community so we welcome applicants from all Christian traditions. However, many of us are Roman Catholic so we have a rhythm of prayer based on regular Eucharist services and Mass in our Chapel for those who wish.
The mix of teaching, prayer, fellowship and work / service will vary depending on which part of the course you are on (for more details click the links above, for upcoming dates). On some occasions you would join in with events we organise for our fellowship, with worship and invited speakers, and if possible on retreat days.
During the day you would join us in our daily work routine: looking after the retreat centre, gardens and farm; crafts; cooking, and more …!
You would also have the chance to to regularly touch base with a member of community.
And yes, you do get free time –most evenings and day off on Monday! Plus days out from time to time.
If English is not your first language, you must be able to communicate and understand English. If you can’t, get some good lessons quickly! Unfortunately we cannot provide translators for teaching sessions or communal prayer times.
Although Covid-19 restrictions are lifting at the moment in the UK, events at HOD are subject to current restrictions. Please see our page Coronavirus (COVID-19) and your safety for more.
